1.18.0.5 or 1.18.0.6 - what's going on? (mac user)

I logged in 3 minutes before the scheduled offline period was due to end, and I started downloading the 'latest version' as provided on the SL Downloads home page - 1.18.0.5. I had arranged this hours before, and had other jobs to do while I waited for the lengthy download. I installed it, and after it was hanging on the "SL may appear to be frozen" screen, it suddenly quit saying there was a new version 1.18.0.6 !!

Dammit. Having 2 new versions has thrown my plans right out. I'm now downloading this 'new new' version, but from the comments I read here, it's not even going to launch on my Mac? And why didn't they put 1.18.0.6 up on the website in time? And what was wrong with 1.18.0.5 - if it was such a disaster it had to be replaced straight away, then why did this not show up in testing?

This is dire. Before this, the previous 2 versions (1.17.2 and 1.17.3) were so unstable I was using 1.17.0.12 quite happily, with only an occasional crash. It was stable, it did what I wanted, I was happy. In fact, I was so happy with it, I was dreading the next 'compulsory' version as I just KNEW it was going to be belly up.

I've been offline now for nearly 8 hours. And even when the 'other' download completes, there is no guarantee I will be able to use it. Surely we should be given the chance to use an older version, however buggy it might be, in situations like this? Better to be allowed to use an old viewer than unable to get onto SL at all, not see our friends?

In the UK we have an expression, that involves the words "brewery", "organise", "booze-up" and "couldn't". It comes to mind.

My guess would be that (5) was a beta version and that once they had completed work on the main grid it showed some bugs that weren't apparent in testing or on the beta grid. Therefore, they did a quick revision to fix the problem and it became (6). That's why it's sensible that LL never put the new viewer up till they have run main grid checks otherwise everybody would be complaining that they had to download a revision.

WOW, this sucks the big one.

1.18.6 texture load times (ctrl, shift, 3) is the worst I have ever seen it. FPS down to 10 and bandwidth nearly off the scale.

Guy's this was all ok before 1.18.6 ????

One step forward two steps back !!!

So it's not only me. Some textures don't even load. I thought an update would be an improvement but not in this life i guess.

Now I have it running, so that's at least ok. BUT - I just checked my activity monitor and SL is using 70% of my CPU. It never used that much before!!

See texture loading problems above for possible reason why it is. SL is designed to grab as much resource as it can possibly suck up though.

Can't even download new version

I'm told I need to upgrade to to 1.18.0.6. The automated updater crashes. When I go to the downloads section of secondlife.com, the link to download is broken! I am unable to log in, yet apparently 44,000 people are currently online. How is everyone getting the latest version?

Broken download link = http://s3.amazonaws.com/download-secondlife-com/Second%20Life%201-18-0-6%20Setup.exe

The response I get: "can't find the server at s3.amazonaws.com"
