I rarely post in these forums. Not worth the effort... But here's 1.13.1(4) on the grid and once again it has broken more than it fixed for the every day SL user. What's the big problem this time? If the chat bar is open the Home key no longer controls flying!!!!! Nasty! Bad bad bad!
Us player in the game chat all the time (unlike Lindens who rarely say anything), and we also travel around. Like - flying. we *need* both chat and Av control at the same time. the new 'Focus' interface, when it first came out, had a useful feature - it could be set up to control the Av with the KeyPad arrow keys all the time, and the chat bat edit point with the lft&right arrow keys in the 'upside-down-T' set of arrow keys. That was really good - a feature that has been asked for for a long time. Like many good ideas, it didnt last. The last BETA test had removed this neat feature. AND broken 'Home-Fly'. Was bug reported on preview. Now its on the main grid. Bad.
I'm not against other modes of operation - eg. use of emacs-like ctrl-shift/alt letter keys to do Av moving, or change setting, or single mode only - you can *either* chat *or* move your Av around, but have to switch between these modes using 6 escapes or ctrl-enter - or some such. If you love those modes that's great, and I think you should have those modes too. BUT please dont *break* the one resonable mode we liked in the process of fixing up some other mode! Make an option that cleanly switches between modes.
Add this release to the list of new ideas that just were not done right. Or at all.

I used the home key to fly all the time. I don't like using the page up key to fly.

From: Fremont Cunningham If the chat bar is open the Home key no longer controls flying!! Oh, cool.. i always found that annoying. Imagine trying to edit what you're about to say in chat, and instead you wind up hovering 6m in the air. With the chat bar in focus, normal word processing keys shoud work. Namely, Home, End, Shift Home, and Shift End. Home should bring you to the beginning of the line.

Frankly any keyboard/UI changes should either be a)optional or b)held off until they have given us the ability to reassign keys to our liking.
They broke chat focus twice and fixed it a month after breaking it both times.. now they partialy break it with the new setup... guess they never learn.
Now opening any window takes the control away from the arrow keys stoping any movement until you click away from the window... really pointless and does more harm than good.
For the most part this update wasn't to terribly bad compared to most of the previous since 1.5 but... and this is a HUGE BUT!!!
Don't make changes to how the UI works until you give us the ability to put it back the way we are used to or PREFER it please...
Thank you

There is already a preferences option to select whether that happens or not. Presumably you have turned that off so that arrow keys don't move you in chat. Those of us who have chosen that "normal word processing keys" should move us around in world expect all of them to continue working in world. In other words, what you prefer to happen in your chosen mode of operation shouldn't change things for those of us who have chosen another.

I could live with a different key than Home to fly, but if you use the pageup key to fly, it affects your jumping. SL is too sluggish to make something that depends on holding a key down for an interval control something as often used as flying. There's no "stop flying and just fall down" with the chatbar showing key now, holding pagedown makes you fly down, not stop flying.

With the new "escape recenters the camera" the home key no longer does that when you're sitting on something. I'm a person who leaves the chat bar open ALL THE TIME and I don't want to hit esc, esc, enter to recenter my camera and have my chat bar too.

From: Draco18s Majestic With the new "escape recenters the camera" the home key ... I don't want the escape key to recenter my camera. Just because I accidentally hit the escape key one time more than I meant shouldn't make me get punished by moving the camera.

Yes.. MOST annoying... Before you could chat normally and hit enter to say the text, but if you hit enter with no text in the chat box it would close the chat box. Hitting enter again would reopen it. Perfect... NOW we have to choose between always having the chat box open (which negates using many many keyboard shortcuts as you'll be chatting instead of shortcutting), or type one line, enter (say), enter (reopen chat), highlight chat cursor (lost focus), enter another line, repeat... Not to mention all the times you forget the 'close chat on enter' option is enabled (because you actually USE letter B to bring up build mode), and wind up jumping or flying or worse when you try to chat in response to something. The home->fly thing is annoying, but if you dont have the chat box open it does work. If you reopen chat after you start flying, only the people who use the directional keys for AV movement can easily balance the two modes (thankfully thats me). WASD people have extra steps in there thanks to lost focus...

Well, at least the WASD people are getting the frustration us arrow people had when the WASD controls were implemented. "WTF? I'm jumping instead of typing!"
Not that I have anything against them, I just hate using their controls (I always hit E and not W. That and I am right handed, so I used my RIGHT HAND to use directional movement in games. On the arrow keys. Logically placed for my right hand. It wasn't until FPS that I needed my right hand on the mouse, and I never got any good at them).

I want the [7] key back on the number pad. I can't find any way to defocus the chat line. Which means that if I'm flying I have to drop driving, grab my mouse, find the "Stop Flying" button on the screen, and press it.
Of course, if you've been orbited, or are skydiving.. being able to "stop flying" and fall is a neccessity. Of course if you're free falling with no chute, being able to quickly "start flying" before you hit the ground and "break" your avatar is pretty critical too.
Bad move LL.. put Home and End (7 and 1) back the way they were.

They fixed it...
12-19-2006 09:44
For those who read the older threads... After only a few days LL released an 'optional update' that mostly restored the Home key to its original function. They also made Home, PgUp and PgDn on the keypad duplicate the functions in the 6-bar.
Sadly, these keypad keys are still tightly bound to the T-bar and 6-bar keys, that is, if in Preferences one unselects 'arrow keys move Av when chatting' BOTH sets of arrow keys now drive the chat-box cursor. (Left-right functionality only, still no recall.) NEITHER steer the Av.
A good patch to get back what was lost. A missed opportunity for improvement.
