I would like to propose expanding the MOTD in future versions of SL. (Just in case anyone doesn't know the term, the MOTD is that little message that pops up underneath the progress bar when you're first logging in. The one that right now says that Linden Labs is hiring. And doesn't say anything about there being two preview grids, or the Views program starting up, or new folks being rehomed at InfoHubs.)

I would suggest that this limited MOTD is instead replaced with a scrolling browser window, similar to the one now used for Help, which pops up at the same time as the login username/password box. This is the same model used by the majority of online systems for news announcements.

At the moment important information from LL is scattered across various locations, including the web site itself, Linden owned blogs, and in-world displays. Gathering this together in one place would greatly improve access and integration and also reduce "why wasn't I in the know?" type complaints.

I hope LL will consider implementing this in a present or future version. Since it is only a variant of the existing Help code I hope it would not require too much implementation time.

i think this would be a nice idea. I thought maybee the MOTD could spill out in chat as soon as you login. Either that or we could do like they do on World of Warcraft and have a news column on the side of the login page. :)

Yeah! I want hyperlinks too!

I'll do anything I can to help with this.

UO has something like that - when you open the program, before you log in, you get a window with the MOTD, news, links, updates, etc... The big flaw in their implementation is that they never update the effin' thing exept with the latest scheme to bilk to users, I mean marketing promotion.
