It seems the whole Second Life was shut down tonight due to some person creating a virus or whatever. I read the police blotter often and see some serious offences there with punishments of 3 days and 7 days, why not just ban these idiots forever?
Mt grief is I pay Tier, and I am just 19 and it is alot of money, and I know others pay alot more than me. I hate it when this thing gets shut down due to some idiots messing around and you people at Linden sit there and give people warnings and 3 and 5 day suspensions. BAN them forever please and let the 7000 os so people on average who are on enjoy this. Once an ass always an ass, just ban them please.
This is getting so vrazy, I am seriously dissillusioned with this whole thing. Its sad cause you have a great thing here, but it gets spoiled by a few. I am also sure I have 3 trillion boxes in my inventory when this place finally gets up and running again. Why not put unsolicited objects in a folder called unsolicited so it is easy to delete.
I hate paying tier and joining something that perpetually lets me down, fix it, rid the bad apples once and for all I vented, thanks

Yeah, I agree. Why let let these type of people back in?! If it was a little offense or something where they didn't know they did something wrong (as if many things would be considered this), I can understand a time ban, but when they end up causing so much trouble the grids shut down! How could we let them back!
I'm just glad I hadn't put any money into the slots that give higher payout with wins. I would have ended up losing money.

Because sometimes these people are victims themselves. They're given a self replicating item or an Modable item of theirs is made into a self replicator, and they are banned for being the pawn in someone else's grid attack. There was a time when I would have fully agreed with permenant bans, but having learned more about how these things are often perpetrated, I can understand LL's stance.
Eck....I feel so dirty now.

I guess my biggest beef is with the lenient 3 and 5 day suspensions given to idiots that cause problems, that are so blatantly seen and proven, just ban their avatar, let them fill out all the forms again and eventually they will get tired of doing it just to create a bit of havoc. I hate it when a solution is so easy yet not done. I understand that innovents can get caught in someone's web, but if its obvious, or beyond a shadow of doubt, why suspend them, ban them.

I guess that should say alot to us about accepting items that we never asked for or freebies that are just dropped on us. Buying them from somewhere is a good idea but I never accept OBJECTS that people drop on me.

problem is...

Even if they were banned, with LL no varification policy, its only too easy to get another alt within minutes of being banned, or to get an alt to pull off the grid attack in the first place. So i dont see the problem getting any better any time soon

A good idea would be to perma-ban the person from the account creation page as well as the grid and the login server. Problem solved, until they can find a new machine to attack from which is going to cost them.
Hash ID's can't be spoofed like MAC addresses. Just a thought Linden Labs.

Ban the computer and you ban all alts coming from that computer.

Unfortunately not. Most IP adresses are only temporary and change very often.

I thought you had to register with a credit card even if it's a free account. I know I had to. If so, how many credit cards can they have in different names?

From: Sara Steinbeck I thought you had to register with a credit card even if it's a free account. I know I had to. If so, how many credit cards can they have in different names? Alas, those times are over. Test the new account creation sometimes, during one of the short uptimes between the downtimes. It's wide open, all one needs is to make up an email address and pick an arbitrary birthdate. Every minor can get in, every griefer or terrorist can create hundreds of anonymous accounts. From: Markubis Brentano How do they change? Usually a new IP address is assigned to you each time you connect to the internet. A single IP lasts only for the time of continuous connection. Doesn't mean IP addresses can't be tracked back (I hope they do manage to track some of the terrorist's IPs), but that makes an IP ban pretty much impossible. LL could use the machine hash (identifies an individual computer based on its hardware) to ban those script kiddies with attention deficit though.

Ah, THATS what I was thinking when I said the computers ID number. That's how Steam handles its Counterstrike game. I upgraded my system recently, and Steam didn't recognize me and required me to update my information to verify that it was actually me.

Some people also use alternate ips or proxies to hide their true IP address which is why its not always easy to ban a person from a website, game, irc, etc.
I help run a forum and irc and know this to be true. And A friend of mine helps run one of the northstar islands and had delt with a griefer who thought the banning ability was a joke and gloated about how he'd be back within minutes.
The only thing the lindens could really do would be a full spectrum ip ban which would leave hundreds if not thousands of innocent people (some could even be premium members) banned along with the griefers.

Also, it seems they ARE listening now, time will tell. by the way, has anyone checked to see if the teen grid has been attacked like this? i would be very interested in knowing if they are having the same issues with griefing, replicating etc.

Sure, they've been on top of things, and I give them credit for that. But it's one thing to be running around putting out fires such as they have been doing the past few weeks, and its another thing to lock up the gasoline, close the gates, and allow certified people ONLY in. If they don't roll back their silly idea to allow unverified people into this game, this is only going to continue....and people will go away. I for one, have already sold all of my land and my partner is now selling most of hers. It's not cost effective to be paying these prices for a program that we can't even enjoy. And not ONCE has a notice been made by Lindens to refund any money back for downtime. How many of you have lost time in SL this past month? Have you figured the percentage of how much time was lost?

*snrrrrrzggk* I'm home from work sick with a cold... and SL is closed so I need to find *AGHCHOO* something else to keep my mind off of (pardon me, *HONNNK*) the rate at which I'm emptying kleenex boxes. I'm beginning to suspect the pile of snotrags threatening to overflow my desk-side trashcan is yet another self-replicating grey goo attack! Help! Help! It's spread to my house!
