There have been versions of the 'First Look viewer' and 'Release Candidate' with really bad 'blooming' and 'whiting out', often at sunset, but also at any time of day, depending on local lighting. This is the worst I've seen yet though...
A few days ago I used half a day setting lights and illuminating my shop - which is at best very difficult, the way the effects of local light is interpreted and rendered... I managed a passable result; but - today I installed the 1.19.1.4 viewer and all was lost in blooming, whiting out, over-saturation of light - like the worst I've seen in some of the former 'First Look viewer' and 'Release Candidate' versions.
The 20m beams from my lighthouse looks like 2 hollow cones of plastic, instead of the nice fading-out beams of light they used to be; and the small cloud hanging over a house on my sim, suddenly is a glaring white hole in the screen (only slightly exaggerated).
Apart from that the environment seems to be rendered in a way that somehow makes it look less real than before, ecpecialy at longer distances and far shots.
Just my opinion and observations.

Try making your own custom settings.... That's what it's for. I find sunrise far too orangey.

Another point of interest that should be fixed. Linden trees, plants and grass! From a distant they really look awfull. When you come near the exual form pops up. Windlight made them look even more awfull. When will that be fixed? Amiryu Hosoi, Click here for Second Life SearchClick for matching products on SLXClick here for Hosoi Ichiba. Well Alyx...

those things can't be set in the 1.15.14 viewer - only sky and water can be modified - not overall lighting. (EDIT: Sorry, yes they can - thx Alyx)

yes Alyx

after a closer view I see that it does, thx.
It would be nice though, if we could all have a reasonably shared world experience and didn't have to do all sorts of tweakings that might/might not let us see what the person standing next to us see - the ultimate in individualism, lol - looks nice to me but can't be shared with my partne or neighbour...

You can always tone down the gamma if everything's too bright! Just check out the presets and what settings they use. They had a long discussion throughout all the Windlight First Look viewers on the blog about what the defaults should be....it was far worse in the beginning! In the future there WILL be the possibility to share settings and to set the lighting sim wide and all that.

sounds interresting Alyx..

Thx for the feed-back. We shall see... Anyways it's a fascinating world, this SL, and I love it. So far it has mainly improved; but too much default luminocity - or too wide a dynamic range? - in the viewer itself + the endless possibilities of tweaking, makes me a bit leery...

Lighting is terrible

That's one of the problems with the update. Also, poses are not working, and I can't place prims on my avatar. I used to dread Wednesdays because they were invariably "update" days. I'm back to dreading what "improvements" Second Life will come up with next.

Upgrade = Downgrade
04-04-2008 23:46
It has now gotten to the point that I automatically view any announced "upgrade" by LL as a certain downgrade accompanied by countless headaches. Wasn't SL supposed to be fun? Well, it is not anymore. I'm more miserable in SL tonight than after a very hard day at work today. I now prefer work to SL. There are fewer problems with which to contend.

Ive been using W/L for months now and it takes time to get used to sure but it is nicer overall in my opinion. For those who havent been working with it ..and the oppurtunity has been here for a long time your work will need some tweaking / optimising certainly. May i suggest you trying adding the new wonderfull Glow feature to your gradiated light beams this will really bring them to life instead of looking like plastic cones as you said. As for whiting out ye it can be an issue at certain times of day but its no diff than RL in a way when there is strong light.
Good luck im sure youll come to accept the new look give it time X)

Some people need to look at their builds. I saw one the other day, that had every piece of the building set to glow max.

World, Environment Settings, Environment Editor, Lighting Tab, adjust scene gama, use Clouds and Atmospheric Tabs to adjust haze, adjust sun size and focus etc etc, when you have whats good, save as default.. or make a few profiles and give them names.

Letting every user make the world look different is total BS. Changing the Gamma and such is acceptable but most of the other changes just make it impossible for any artist or designer to know how something will look on the end users screen.
