create a prim
edit it using the tabs, (xy, zx, or what the heck they are : p to small to see)
make sure you have - snap to grind on.
whats with the huge black box surrounding prims?, please dont say this is a "future" -.-

Set grid size in grid options to 50.0m. Block is still there, but not really visible around the object anymore.
No idea what it's good for. Doesn't really look like a bug, but if it's a feature, maybe somebody can explain me what it's meant for?

Yes, very much a bug. It happens on some video cards and not on others. A fix is in the works.
