SL does not like 256MB ATI Radeon X1300PRO?

I just installed latest SL viewer on a new Dell E520 with 256MB ATI Radeon X1300PRO and Vista Premium. When I start SL I get an error message that says that my drivers are obsoletes and needs to be updated. That's make no sense: I have one of the latest graphics cards with updated drivers!

I have the Radeon X600 256Mb with Windows XP and after installing the new update it just keeps crashing before I even get to the login screen. If it's a choice between no SL or a new graphics card, it'll have to be no SL because everything else works fine.

You know, the more they fix it, the less it works.

Well, I just purchased the new system to have better graphics in various applications included SL!!! I installed the latest ATI drivers and now I get no more the error message: simply SL chashes before login! Sigh....

I was running just fine until this new viewer, now I just crash immediately following... SL messing with my display options. I can't even get to the log in screen to uncheck the various things they say to uncheck. On top of that, it flushed out my previous install exe so now I can't even go back and try to reinstall the previous client that worked.

Anyone find a successful work around to this? Is there a settings file inside the program that can be edited? anything?

Thank you, I have an ATI Radeon 9600 with 256 meg on board and 1 gig of ram in the system, running XP pro.

I'm hesistant to update drivers. Nothing else is wrong with my system and up to this viewer, nothing was running wrong in SL. :(

I have a Toshiba Tecra m4 with NVIDIA GeForce Go 6200 and Windows XP Tablet Edition. I know that sometimes things don't work with Tablet Edition, but SL did until yesterday, where either it crashes upon login, or what happens is this:
The menu bars all disappear, (on the SL screen) and the screen freezes, flickers, where parts of prims disappear and avatars disappear altogether and I only see their attatchments. When the screen unfreezes, some avatar outfits look like something out of Tron. It continues to happen intermittently until I relog, if, of course, I am able to relog at all without crashing upon login again. Would anyone happen to know why this happens, and where to send this problem? It's really frustrating that I can't go back to the previous version of SL.

Eadoin: Probably doesn't help much since I'm running Windows XP (and not Vista like you), but I do have the exact same card (ATI Radeon X1300 Pro) in one of my machines, and using the latest Omega drivers, SL works fine (even after the update). Those drivers aren't available for Vista yet, though... there is a note on the main page that they are in the works.

Rose: I know you're hesitant to try updating the drivers, but I've had a lot of success with the Omega drivers (where I've had problems with ATI's Catalyst drivers). If you do want to try this... the Catalyst drivers need to be completely removed, before using the Omega drivers.

You can turn off Hardware checking in Preferences, before you connect.

You may also wish to install .Net Framework version 3.0 from .Net Framework 3.0 I found that makes my Windows XP system run quite smoothly. Also try out DirectX 9.0c for the latest verion of DirectX.

Which version? I tried both 1.14 and the latest FirstLook: both crashes.

I did not know of Omega drivers... just Catalyst... I'm available to try, but first I have to wait for Vista version... It is quite disapponting to buy a robust PC with a good graphics card expecting better results in SL... and it does not work! :(

OK... I installed version 7.3 of Catalyst drivers and now 1.14 starts (not FirstLook, anyway). However, when I try to login, I just wait and wait and wait... :( Better than before but far to be in.

I have a similar problem on my notebook with 1.14. SL doesn't even make it past the video check. Can't change the preferences because it crashes before it gets there.

ASUS Z83V, Centrino 1.83 Ghz, 1 Gb RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon X700, 100 Mb HD. Worked fine under the 1.13 versions.

Ouch... try using a previous veiwer client to set the preferences than change back to the new one.. that should stick.

Under Windows XP, for second Life 1.14.0, this exact same video card (256MB ATI Radeon X1300PRO) works quite well.

Windows Vista uses different drivers though. That's undoubtedly the issue.

This should fix the problem. However do note:

Avatar skins under Vista are darker.
Frame rates in full screen mode are low, avg 17fps
Frame rates in windowed mode are even lower, avg 10fps

Send bug reports to ATi as this is an ATi driver issue and not a SL one.

Update: You may want to hold off on updating the Catalyst drivers as there is a very big glaring flaw in them that causes a BSOD on reboot. The details of which can be read about by clicking the URL below.

Catalyst 7.3 DOES not fix the problem. I tried to disable most graphics parameters: no way. The interface opens, but as I connect, I wait forever... I suspect the problem is *Vista*

The problem is not Vista, as Vista works fine with nVidia cards. The problem is ATI drivers and thier lack of proper support for OpenGL.
