I have heard a question about changes in permissions and llGiveInventory. I wondered if other people are having other problems with permissions.

Yep, I'm having problems with llGiveInventory. "Unable to give inventory: Blocked by permissions".

This is one object giving an inventory item to another object.

EDIT: Also, this was on Sandbox land.

That sounds like the problem I heard about. There was talk of it being a change in response to the problem Sunday night with the overly reproductive GriefSphere. The Scripters of SL group chat said it was because the objects now have ot be on land owned by the object owner. How true that is I don't know. The land in the case of the problem-haver was group land, a group in which they were an officer. They reported deeding the object to the group was likely to cause problems with permissions, based on past occurrences, and also didn't know if it would work anyway.

I don't know Aaron, I was just repeating my understanding of what I read, and hoping to hear from others who knew what was was going on.

Also wanting to hear of any other problems or changes with permissions.

I get asked questions or hear questions in a few group chats and I don't know the answers.

It did sound like a pain i unless there is a simple solution or the problem is something else.

Implemented to stop grey goo attacks
10-24-2005 23:59
From: someone
What was implemented was the sure fire way to stop a repeat of last Sunday on extremely short notice. Some of my favorite pieces of user content take advantage of self replication features, and for now those are limited to land you own. Hopefully this can be improved.

Other ideas on preventing grey goo attacks are welcome, you can email me directly at kelly@lindenlab.com and I will forward suggestions to the rest of the development team.

Hrm.. Disabling Object-to-Object llGiveInventory limits geometric rez-bombs, but with a little setup, it wouldn't be hard to create an object that performs a _near_ geometric rez-bomb.. If I wanted to spend the time (it wouldn't take very long), I could create an object that has an object in it, that has an object in it, that has an object in it, {..and so on..}, that has an object in it. Each of which is set to rez objects as fast as they can, and perform an attack _nearly_ as effective as I imagine the Sunday one was..

Isn't the real issue here in the rezzing, not in the inventory transfer? I think that's what needs to be attacked.

We need to make it better known that you can read textures/notecards/sounds by their asset key then.

Really though this highlights the fact SL will hang itself happily if you ask it to. I guess script performance rating and intelligent throttling would be too much to expect...

I would like to register my complete and total dissatisfaction with this particular disabled feature. I cannot stress how much this screws me up, how many potential products it inhibits, and how totally unnecessary it is for the long term.

I understand why it was implemented on short term, but once the situation was resolved, it became a really bad idea. And it broke my product line. And frankly, I doubt it will do much to stop large-scale griefing. If somebody's looking to pull an idiot stunt, they'll figure out another way to do it.

i know i personally need this fixed, but whats strange is it works everything except the 'check for copyable permissions on textures' feature i have implemented. i can drop in a notecard and it will transfer to the root prim fine, but the textures give the stupid Unable to give inventory: Blocked by permissions error. And this is on my land deeded to my group.
