MAJOR: Unable to create account! (For friend)

An account creation attempt was made by me with my credentials after a friend pointed out to me that he could not sign up. Of course, because my credentials were already used, I was unable to create an account because "Linden Labs reserves the right to restrict..." yadda-yadda.*

So he convinced me to use HIS credentials to attempt it, and I did. I tried using both Internet Explorer 6.1 SP1 and Firefox 2.0.0.3, just to make sure, and sure enough, it doesn't work. So I tried using some fake credentials to see if it was just his German name it wasn't liking, and it returned the same error! I'm thoroughly convinced the sign up process is broken.

Below are the errors (with a URL to an image showing the actual error - with, of course, the names and such blotted out):

The following must be corrected before continuing:
1: Please enter your Credit Card Number.
2: Please enter the Name as it appears on your credit card.
3: You must enter a code to match the new image each time you submit this form.

... wait, what?

First off, credit card number? Show me a place to enter one, and I'll put it in!
Secondly, "Name as it appears on your credit card" .. again, show me where, and I will.
Thirdly, I've attempted this very process, like, 5 times and it does NOT work.

( * = By the way, that so-called reserved right to restrict is part of why I'm contemplating giving up on this program.. I have no alts, just about everyone I know does, and it would be NICE to have an alt I could use for all my business purposes instead of digging through my main character's inventory with the limited sort capabilities it has.

Having a nice, uncluttered character with an empty inventory? Yeah.. I could go with that. At LEAST lend us the ability to have at LEAST two characters per set of credentials, LL! We kinda pay for them, y'know. )

This is intolerable

I am encountering the *very exact* same problem as you, in trying to sign up a new account for an alt. There is no field to put in credit card details and then when you submit what details you can put in (name, country, security code, the basics), it gives that exact same message as what you were faced with. This doesn't make any sense at all. I tried doing this on a different computer in a different household, as in the Knowledge Base it says something about a limit of "5 accounts per household" but it was doing the very same thing. I've also heard from a friend of mine she couldn't sign up for an account for SL, and this is her first time, she is completely new to SL. She is facing the very exact issues of it not showing a field for credit details and then when she tried to re-sign up with the same avatar name chosen, guess what happened? "This name is taken". Yes of course it was taken! By *HER*! *grrr* And the same goes for me with the name I chose (for my new alt). I even signed up a different avatar name and account, just in case, but again same problem, *and* now it's telling me that and the first name I chose *both* are taken so I can't use either even though the sign up process for them was never actually gone through with. Please LL respond to our e-mails! (my friend and I)!

Just a bit of a prod. This needs seen!

Yeah, I forgot to mention that. The names I and my fried wanted are also in use now, thanks alot! We know you're out there, Lindens, PLEASE give us some kind of idea as to what's going on! And, by the way, thanks a lot for removing Live Help. Shows just how much you care about prospective customers.

I've tried so many different ways to get a hold of you guys, but the phones are tied up 100% of the time, and when I DO wait and wait and eventually get through, it's an answering machine, or I get hung up on! Can't e-mail and get a timely response, can't get in-world help...

Things disappear (like my 4096m plot and the entire Geadin's Island), and all I get is a run-around. L$10,000 spent on objects that disappear, and I'm just told to contact someone else. When I contect them, I get told to contact someone else. I mean.. seriously, what do you hope to accomplish? More bad press? >.<

SecondLife is awesome, guys. It needs a little work, but it's awesome. The best thing you guys can do right now is fix the bugs and quit hiding. Make sure things work (ESPECIALLY a sign-up page), and if they don't crack down on it. Like I do when someone finds a bug in something I sell them, or something I thought I repaired - if it comes back to me (both IRL and in SL), I fix it!

Just to add my voice and give this topic a bump.

I'm seeing exactly the same problem as detailed in the earlier posts i.e. being asked for credit card details with no area to enter them.

One of the worst problems with this, is that you end up blocking the use of the name you originally chose for your avie.

Please someone, at least acknowledge the problem, this need to be fixed.

Thanks,

Curmudgeon

Jira?

Give me more info on what Jira is and I might. :)

As an update, I noticed earlier that this problem with the sign-up page seems to be consistent. I tried again earlier with two new names, in both IE and Firefox, and it STILL is not working. I am now going to post this thread in Linden Answers and anywhere else it applies, until I see a response from the Lindens. This is a very serious issue. If it persists, there will be no names left, and no way at all to create any sort of an alternate account or anything. This is VERY bad.

I ran into this problem, with the account creation not working the first time, and the name then being unavailable. But I was able to go back later, and the name was then available. It seems that the name is locked out for a bit, but then gets released. So you might want to try it again after a short break.

Linden Answers

Good luck on posting in Linden Answers.

It's been closed since January.

It used to be possible to contact support when a problem occurred during signup that blocked use of the name on a subsequent attempt. They'd fix up a way for the signup to proceed.

I had this done by emailing support@secondlife.com - but it was a long time ago. I have no reason to think this still works.

Yeah, I noticed that when I went to post there. I'm starting to think the Lindens really DON'T care.

Keep up the good work, LL, you may just have found a solution to all the problems! Making everyone WANT to leave! (Yes, that's sarcasm.)

Just adding my voice to this. Exact same issue but I am actually creating an alt that I will use for certain RP groups and I verified that each user is allowed up to 5 accounts. They should add something where you can create an alt from your exisiting account so it's clear and obvious that's what you're doing. Tons of other online games have this feature it could really be simplified. If anyone who sees this has the ability to create a feature petition let me know so I can vote for it. I've never looked into creating a petition myself but I may because this is really annoying.

I tried to create an alt and support told me they are overhauling the whole account and registration thing, but don't have an ETA yet.
