I'm sure that, on older version of SL, the arrows that appear at the bottom of the IM window when there are more tabs than will fit, would flash to indicate that an out-of-sight tab in that direction had a new message (in the same way that visible tabs do).
Was this removed in a recent version, and if so can we please have it back?
