Is it just me, or is this new "all improved" "more stable" viewer which is supposed to be less prone to crashing and quicker with graphics more like a jalopy bought from a caniving used car salesman?

I crashed twice in the first 5 minutes of use, and every minute, ON the minute, the screen resets and I have to download ALL the textures again.

I'm getting 2.5fps on a brand new GForce video card.

This sucks

On the other hand, I spent an hour teleporting from known laggy sims to overloaded freebie malls until I was able to hit a crash point. It's about what I would expect to see after running in the First Look and Release Candidate for the past few months. (^_^)y

Still love that shiny water. (o.o)

New version seems way more stable with less lag for me, but there are a lot of artifacts on the screen to the point I can't see anything and it is driving me nuts!

So far, more stable, less lag, and I am surprised. And I have local lighting on too.

The memory hole problem where my viewer drops hundreds of megs of ram has yet to surface but the day is early.

1.19.1 (4) is absolutely horrible
04-04-2008 13:14
The release of 1.19.0 (5) was bad enough. Why do The Lindens continue to make the viewer, the user interface, ever more worse. First time I logged on with 1.19.1: Crashed within 10 minutes, video quality greatly decreased over all distances, frame rate cut in half!! So, the only logical thing for me to do was to go back to 1.19.0. The new release is not worth the bandwidth to even download.

And still ever yet more system wide problems seem to keep growing. Business owners and their employees suffer while transactions are down. At times we cannot TP anywhere.
Items get lost or stuffed up our asses. We crash. Sims crash. Rolling restarts never fix problems. Planned outages never fix problems.

Lindens, go back to the 1.18 viewers, stop playing with the GUI, and put more resources ON THE ACTUAL PROBLEMS.

Seconded. I'm not here to be dazzled by a bunch of useless eye candy, I'm here to hang out with other people and DO STUFF. And that's pretty damn hard to do when L$ transactions are borked up, and you can't rezz anything out of your inventory 'cause the asset servers are screwed, when even your *skin texture* won't load correctly (never mind any attachments or clothing items), IMs and online friend notifications don't get through...

And those are just the problems we, your customers, have had to labor under just this last WEEK. How long have some of these problems been going on, now? Months? How many of us, your customers, have complained about these things, how many times now? How many times have you assured us that *this* time, it would be fixed, only to have it break again a week later?

But no, instead of buckling down and FIXING the really *important* problems, you guys decided to futz around with the viewer client some more, and now you're jamming this half-baked POS (with a rendering engine that royally f*cks up the look of just about every existing item, I might add) down our throats.

Remind me again why I'm *paying* for this crap?

I hate to say this but i know the trouble we are having they say its the ISP but why is it since this new update we have not been able to play or log in SL? Ever since the release of the new client we have not been able to do much of anything.

I crash. Constantly. If I try to pull stuff out of inventory to give to someone else, I crash. If I try to return objects to people using land settings, I crash. If I try to edit an object, I crash. I have crashed 6 times tonight, and more than 4 last night and more than 10 night before last.

Apparently, I don't need to transfer objects to people, or build, or work on projects though because, since I'm only a basic member, viewer stability is not one of the options I can use to file a support ticket. I tried and got a message my ticket would be ignored.

Jaundiced Avatars
04-07-2008 01:45
I think I posted this to the wrong section of the forums, so I'm reposting here, with hopes that this is the correct section for the new downgrade... errr... alleged upgrade.

I downloaded the newer client because when I went to sign in, it said DOWNLOAD REQUIRED (and to think that they claimed they were going to let the customer make the decision to d/l or not to d/l). Anyhow, no matter what light setting, my skin looks yellowish. I had to remove the face lamps as they totally washed me out. I don't like the darker outlines around the entire avatar in the sunrise and sunset settings. In short..... I don't like it at all!

Ok, that said... anyone know how I can change it so my skin looks more normal again, instead of like I have jaundice?

MI & Other assorted looks
04-07-2008 01:49
Ok, now this is really bizarre... congrats Lindens, you really mucked it up this time!

I put on a new outfit, all looks well on my monitor, but my friends see me differently. I seem to have a MI top, no matter how many times I change tops. Then I figured I'd go to my husbands location and see how I look on his monitor. Well on his, I could see a very blurry top, which I had taken off earlier and replaced with another top. After 5 minutes of trying to rez it on his computer, I went back to where my friends were waiting. One said I had on the older top, one said I still have on the MI top. So what's up?

Lordy I hate these consistant downgrades! Why must SL always work so hard to try to offer more options when all they really do is trash the client. And what every happened to "Optional download"?

Frustrated in SL

Apparently, one of the biggest 'upgrades' that suposed to increase graphics speed, is the default setting of Avatar Impostors. What this basically does is to reduce the veiwable distance in which avatars and to some degree objects, give a hi-rez appearance. At a distance of about 10 mtrs from your avatar, Avatars especially, look like Lego people. Turning that off, regains some of the quality for those with more powerful systems.

When FirstLook came on the scene, the graphical pipelines were openned up and things rezzed quickly and were sharp. I used to get over 40fps even on a relatively low spec system. Gradually over the ensuing raft of 'updates' those pipelines have been stiffled in preference to many other functions. Rolling Clients into one another, doesn't seem to offer a variety of preferences. The addition of Windlight and Voice (voice taking between 1.5-2mb of your bandwidth), Windlight taking about 50% off your graphical capabilities, all adding to the strain.

I have been fortunate (through business requirements more than anything), to have upgraded my systems over the past year or more. Even running a top spec system, only gives me a small percentage of stability (4GB ram = more time before memory leaks get you), higher graphics card(s) (2x 8800GTX with 1GB DDR III ram each) and a Quad core CPU, didn't 'buy' me the rush of extra capacity/useability I'd bargined/hoped for.

Anyone who has been in SL for a couple of years or more, looking back, even in the forums, will have seen all this before. Nothing really dramatic has happened in the Platform. Lag is still an issue, TP/Map/Inventory failures are all still quite common. GC driver updates, OpenGL driver issues, Asset server issues, Transaction issues.... but we do have tear off menus now :p

If you compare the 'upgrades' to the Platform, against the huge rise in technology, broadband deployment, GC's that can amaze you in most platforms, seem locked in time in SL, Dual/Quad core CPU's, GB's of ram available, have all more than quadrupled the available power to SL, seems muted. When I started SL some 4 years ago, on Dialup, 32mb ram GC, 512mb Ram, Windows 98  , all the issues being experienced today, were for the most part, the issues of then. On balance, we have sculpties, flexi, movies, voice, primed clothing, windlight...... but so have many other platforms! I wonder if Big Blue is up for sale?
