Group Permission unpredictability

Some very surprising behaviour got me into a panic earlier today. It appears that having modify rights over an item provides return rights over that item, this may not be a bug but sure wasn't what I was expecting. The following scenarios were eventually diagnosed (after much confusing testing!)

1> If you grant someone else modify rights, then can return your stuff.

2> (This is the tricky group one) Try this:-

Person A deeds an object to a group. The object has "Next owner may modify" selected. The "Share With Group" checkbox is left checked. (Note - unless the object has at LEAST Modify, Copy, Allow Anyone to Copy all checked, then the "Share with Group" box will GREY OUT. However, it is still very much active and can be cleared!)

Person B is in the group to which the object was deeded. Person B has no rights in that group whatsoever, but is simply a group member. By virtue of the fact that the object has "Share with group" and "Modify" enabled, Person B can return that object.

So! Lesson!! Anyone who has group owned objects, make SURE that they are not set to Share With Group - even if that option is greyed out - if the object also has "Next owner can Modify" set - or ANY group member will be able to return the object.

What a fun night.

I have heard and seen some puzzling things over the past few days - members of FurNation Admin group that were able to inexplicably return items from sims where they had no such group rights; members of FurNation Sandbox group that returned group-deeded trees when only the two group Owners have that right - and it culminated tonight when a BRAND NEW member of the FurNation Sandboxes group was able to return the group-deeded couch I was sitting on *with no group roles assigned at all*.

Further testing across two sims produced mixed results, but group members with NO ROLES AT ALL were able to return, manipulate or delete objects on group land, set or not set to group, and in some cases deeded to the group.

I've bug reported it but as I've confirmed the bug with multiple people, in two sims, and have reports of this in other groups, I think the whistle needs to be blown right now - I'd love for some other people to test this and see whether it's only my groups/islands or whether this is a widespread and therefore extremely urgent issue.

UPDATE - what I've found in further testing:-
1> If you grant modify rights to someone, they can return your objects to you, regardless of where they are. This isn't too severe but is counterintuitive and live help tells me it's unintentional and I've filed a bug report. This appears to be consistent.

2> When deeding an object to a group, the "Share object with group" checkbox greys out. However, it can still be checked and unchecked. Objects that are deeded and still have this option selected can be manipulated by any group members, but not returned - this is repeatable and a bug report has been filed. Unfortunately default behaviour is to only allow an object to be deeded after it's set to share with group, and the 'share with group' option is then misleadingly greyed out.

3> Observed earlier today - group members with only "Create/Vote on Proposals" and "Receive Notices" were able to return group owned (IE deeded) objects that had 'share with group' enabled. This is definite - but intermittant and I cannot reproduce at will. I didn't test with group deeded objects that did not have share with group selected.
The original owner of the item (pre-deeded) and the person who returned them had no permissions to modify each other's items either. We tested and repeated this several times, with several objects and at least two group members with no rights managed to return group owned objects.

Others need to urgently test point 3 - can members of your groups who have NO object rights RETURN objects that are deeded to the group? Was this a freak glitch in the grid only tonight - or in my 2 sims - or my group?

Share with group is litterally share with group. This has been around for a while, I first noticed that a share with group object that controlled the camping at Yiff Theater was editable by me, a nobody member, including the scripts. Not that I figured out how the sucker worked before I noticed that I could move it and decided that it was better to let the owner know.

Griefers inviting themselves into groups, returning non-shared, non-group objects.

Prokofy Neva just reported to me an incident where individuals, alts likely of Hero An or accomplices, invited themselves into her groups and banned her from her own parcels, etc.

Last month, I reported Football Hyun came into my estate, invited himself into a private group, and deleted/returned objects which were not shared or deeded, displaying what can only be termed "linden powers". There were a number of other people getting linden powers suddenly at that time, so we thought it a database problem and wrote it off, though we banned Football, cause he lied claiming one of my staff invited him into the group, and having powers doesn't mean you should use them for destruction, though his excuses were bought by LL apparently.

The other day, Football was able to unban himself from my estate ban list, tped in by me, pushed me around with "move bitch", but fortunately was unable to cause more damage before he was rebanned. He then claimed in IMs that another member of my staff unbanned him and gave him a DD gun, playing stupid about what it was.

Filed another AR against him, but LL has yet to send me a confirmation email about this AR even being filed. I therefore have the suspicion that Football Hyun is in league with some rogue Linden.

Group Permissions also have a lot of uncaught behaviour, IMO it seems they were rushed out, as a lot of things I would have looked for have surfaced recently now I have my own plot of land again. The issue being that I couldn't look for them during the beta because there was no land available to test them on :(

Thank you for the heads up. I've unchecked as much stuff as i could from SW. I told the other EM's and officers to do the same to their stuff. I used to notice once in a while pieces of the sim's waterfall would disappear without being returned. They were shared with group so i figured someone accidentally deleted them. However it's happened on numerous occasions, so i assume it's related to this.
