Hello everyone,
Well while the quicktime vunerablity problem has been fixed, it requires you to install a new version of QT which no longer supports win2000. And the new verison of SL RC now checks to see if you have the latest version or not. And if not you can't view any video in SL. I think this is a bit extream as many of us still like and use win2000 (and are willing to just turn on trusted stream sources). Anyone know of a way to bypass this "checking" that LL is now using? I know I can use another version of the client, but I am sure it is only a matter of time before they force all versions to upgrade to this. Also I know several people that crash when this new QT checking is going on. I know my system freezes for about 20 seconds during the check.

yes it sucks, yes xp sucks down 4x more ram for stupid ass wizards no one ever uses and in theory you should be out some money but thats how M$ continues to provide the crapfest os's that have no real improvements

DBD I don't know if one of the open source alternatives to QuickTime may help you.

The exploit from movie and music media has been known for some years. Like virus's, those that create them are one step ahead of those that seek to curtail them. What drives those that write maleware code, is simple... MONEY. Every now and again, they hit a jackpot and it pays a lot of bucks (in the region of billions according to the bank reports of internet fraud).

LL taking the stance of checking you have the latest QT or other potential security breached software, is a good thing. No different to your OS, virus checker, adware software etc etc.

When is the world going to stop blaming those companies/organisations and individuals that try and prevent maleware/exploits etc from attacking our systems, and start focusing the blame on those that actually use exploits and cracks in the defenses?

Changing your passwords on a regular basis can help, not sharing any passwords and or accounts with anyone also helps, updating your software all helps. I'll wager that over 90% of systems connected to the internet have an exploit or two on their system and don't even know it. Many of the latest maleware can turn off your virus checkers, bypass them and your firewalls.

Several ppl have passed me media files directly from their system that have exploits and are dumbfounded and shocked when I inform them. I don't blame them totally, unless they tell me they are using XP with no SP's and haven't updated their software since they bought the system 2 years ago. Fortunately I am able to clean those exploits before we use them on our secure network, for streaming back into SL and the Internet.

As the WWW grows and the introdcution of Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 websites become the 'norm', we will see a huge growth of the exploit coders, eagerly waiting for the next unprotected user to drift into their snare. It's a game of catchup, not prevention.

Oh, there's a web 3.0 now? Shouldn't they wait for 2.0 to be created first lol or are they going to do like Havok and skip straight to web 4.0 :smirks:

Web 2.0 is a framework standard that allows website to support user/viewer content.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_2.0

A webmaster hosts a website that allows its viewers, either open or by membership only, to upload and display their own content for the world to see. For the most part this is uncontrolled in that the ilks of MyWebspace and YouTube can effectively support media that has exploits encapsulated.

Web 3.0 is an upgraded version.

Yes, LL needs to change its system requirements for the second life client. They state:

"Your computer must meet these REQUIREMENTS, or you may not be able to successfully participate in Second Life."

then they list Windows 2000 as a viable operating system. That's no longer correct. You cannot "successfully participate" in any movie viewing in-world if you're running Win2k because of Apple. Luckily for me Quicktime is an unnecessary program in my daily online work and pleasure. It's not a great loss in SL either because few people are shortsighted enough to only show their movies in SL. I can find other sites to view them at if they're worth seeing -- and in much better codecs like DivX.

I have invested too much in Win2k for my business networks. It makes me money and isn't broken, so no game will cause me to upset that golden goose.

It is a shame that LL can't seem to program their way out of the "only one compression standard" hole they find themselves in. Just one of the many programming holes they find themselves in. :)
