I recently purchased new machine

I have a dual core 2.13 6400 and when I go to about in preferences it reports the following
CPU: Intel Pentium Pro (Unknown model) (2133 MHz)
I also have an nvidia 8800gts 320 mb on vista premium 32

the frame rate is way below my old pentium 4 ,nvidia 7800 on XP and I have the old machine and checked setting in preferences, they are the same as my new machine.

I've browsed the forums and read others have had no problem with 8800 but wondering if that's because they are still on xp.

any pointers ,tips or explanations would be greatfully recieved.
I have upgraded to the latest nvidia drivers.

Oh looking out to sea, great frame rate.

TIA

Sam

Unfortunately Vista is currently listed as being unsupported by SL, so the fact that you can run it at all is lucky. You may not like the sounds of it, but my advice would be to install XP if you can, either in place of Vista (which is a performance hog for no good reason anyway) or as separate OS and dual-boot your computer.

I have the same processor and the 8800 GTX, and for me SL runs faster than it does on XP. I usually average around 40-70fps around other people. 100-120fps when I'm in the middle of nowhere. What version of nVidia drivers do you have?

The latest is 158.45: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x86_158.45.html

Thanks for the quick repsonse both of you

driver version is reported as 7.15.11.5824 and I just downloaded it today.
The max frame rate I can get is about 45 looking out to sea and about 2 looking back into the land from the same spot.

One thing I've noticed is that it seems fine for a few minutes then starts slowing down. and becomes so laggy that it gets very slow typing even, I'm not getting packet loss but ping (being in uk) is high, about 230.

What's the difference between the GTX and GTS? mine is 320 MB but XP reports it as 256, does yours report the same Kevin?

interesting your link to the driver is a beta one, me selscting win vista 32 and series 8 card gives me
Windows Vista 32-bit

Yeah, the beta driver is better than the WHQL. The GTX has 768mb of memory, and faster clock speeds but other than that it's the same card. One thing I've noticed is that SL doesn't recgonize or have options for either 320 or 768mb of memory. So I just end up setting it to 512mb in SL's preferences. Generally that doesn't cause my frame rate to go down though, it just makes the textures not load right.

You can try setting the affinity to just one processor by opening up the task manager, going to the processes tab, finding secondlife.exe in the list, right click on it and click set affinity. Then uncheck one of the CPUs and click ok. Also while you're there make sure nothing's maxing out you're processor.

Tried the beta driver and it just crashed me also vista said it didn't recognise the supplier, there has to be something else in SL that's causing the problem, maybe I should hit the beta grid where they test out stuff, thanks for your help kevin if you have any more suggestions (tried all you said so far) I'll give them a go.

That's because it was on the beta grid. So you'll have to go there to accept it :P
