Video cards are freak'n fast these days. An extra 10,000 trianlges is nothing for modern video cards. The current LOD Factor limit is 2. For me 3.125 works and look great. Also it is hard to tell what the current value is for the current setup, since there is no Entry field next to the slider. Its like having a bar chart with no labels which is useless. I've gone ahead and changed the Slider type to "slider" from "slider_bar" where it now allows you to see the values and raised the max LOD Factor to 4. Of course I do get the error missing slider_bar for Prim LOD Factor from panel 3. But hey it works and is more useful and better looking. Panel Prefences 2 layout

It would be great if we could turn off LOD completely, for taking pics or grabbing geometry with glintercept ... those are cases where I don't care about FPS but want all the polygons in the scene.

I think you can change that in Client, Debug Settings, RenderVolumeLODFactor.
It is nice to see the value on the slider.
Do you have any pictures to show us what difference it makes to how things look?

Found one side effect of this recent edit I did. Hitting Cancel cause everything to go to Low Detail settings and sliders will some time zero out. But only for that Panel.

Yes, A higher LOD would be nice. I bought a screaming fast quad graphics card computer (2 gigs of video ram) to finally allow SL to run smoothly. This worked quite well for a while and I was able to get hundreds of fps under most conditions and settings. The problem is that three updates ago or so... SL stopped working on that computer. It was fun while it lasted but I would avoid buying new hardware to play SL better because any given update can leave you aggravated. Fortunately I have many other computers to play SL on (though they are not as nice as that one.) Not everyone will have such options.
However, if they manage to fix whatever bugs introduced by the last updates which prevent it from working now on that computer, a higher LOD would be very welcome.

The drool dripping of my chin when you said "hundreds of fps" just shorted mine out

For picture taking, one might also want ot set the draw distance above 512.
That can be done by editing the panel_preferences_graphics1.xml file, changing max_val for the control_name="RenderFarClip" to 1024 or 2048. I don't know what the useful real maximum is. I used to do this from time to time a year of so ago manually in the old settings.ini file after hearing Hank Ramos talking about it. Now it can be put into the interface. Neato.

I did try this one a few days ago. and found 512 is really the limit for this engine. By just putting a higher max value in just pushes the fog back that much futher. It still stops rezzing objects at 512

From: Gearsawe Stonecutter I did try this one a few days ago. and found 512 is really the limit for this engine. By just putting a higher max value in just pushes the fog back that much futher. It still stops rezzing objects at 512 I'm not sure I agree, having tried it last night, although I usually run at 128 draw so just changing to 512 was sufficient differently looking it might have tricked me. You might try it again and see it turning water ripple off and on makes a difference, that affects the way the far off part gets drawn. It definitely used to work, but that was a long time ago, and they might well have changed the rendering system enough to make this not work. One thing it definitely did - with the draw set to 1024, it beyond question slowed my system way down. I ended up in the middle of nowhere, in a land of nothing but gray. SL was no longer responding to mouseclicks or keypresses.

OKAY! Yay it is Fixed in Preview, they didn't raise the LOD level but it looks.
Cylinder number of side LODs are now. 8,16,32 opposed to 6,9,15,24. Spheres are still the same.
