Graphics messed up on Mac OS 10.4

I have a dual G5 2.0 with an nVidia GeForce 5200 graphics card ( same card as in iMac G5 ). Memory is at 2.5GB.

I have all updates ( OS and QT ) installed.

The graphics keep flashing, updates are slow and faulty ( an object or avatar is updated with the texture it's supposed to have, only to be reverted to a gray blob and re-updated a second later ) making SL almost umplayable.

Increasing detail level causes nearby regions ( like in the default area where four regions meet ) to disappear, only to be redrawn fully seconds later.

Try to check this out maybe a new driver - or a FAQ page? Good Luck!

nvidia drivers are written by apple (or at least distributed by them) so you will not find nothing on nVidia website. I have the same problem and i found useful to change the video ram setting SL is running (go to preferences->Adv Graphics->Video Card Memory) changing it from 64 to 32 or back from 32 to 64. Also removing cache folder from ~/Library/Application Support/SecondLife helps.

anyway i think it's a bit preference not set in the graphic system configuration of SL application....hope they will fix it.

Good luck to you (and to me)

do you mean you're -increasing- your detail preferences to try to solve the prob?? :) as fast as your machine may be, that will only amplify the probs...

the ati vidcards also have the same graphics artifacts you're encountering (at least, i did with my machine). once i reduced -all- my display prefs, and also modified my own sl behavior (watching the minimap to make sure enough tiles are loaded ahead of me before flying into the area), i had much fewer display probs.

hope that helps - take care; have fun!! :)

Not increasing, just changing them.
The bug has something to do with garbled video memory and texture cache. Not going into tech details here, but changing that preference seems to clean up memory. Also sometimes turning on or off anisotropic filter helps (depending on the size of the texture that got garbled...).

these are anyway just poor workarounds, sometimes things works, sometimes, not. Hope lindens+apple solve the problem.

PS: don't be sarcastic next time, i thought i was clear in what i wrote.
