I'm sure alot of poeple were displaced from their homes in Nola. The good news is, alot of them, several-hundred thousand of them, are coming to TEXAS!. When the water recedes, there will be something like 25-30,000 of them arrive in my homecity, Dallas While generous Texans are reaching to our new crop of immigrants, and possibly even a few of our own homeless (a group I was a part of merely 9 months ago, god bless the people that helped me stand me up again, one of them an SL'er herself) that will benefit from this. My current DSL Tech Support job, it's nice, it pays enough to live on (as in, eat, pay rent, but not much else, re: my struggle to buy a new computer), but it's running out on november. I might have the oppurtunity to relocate to another facility with an additional twenty mile commute. If I can make it to november (car trouble and recently issuses carpools have killed my late points), I'll get a tidy little sum as a bonus for my loyal service. It's just enough to keep me in business for a month or two as I relocate to a different state. Why? Because there's nothing in Dallas for me. It takes months for me to get a job, and with the unflux of refugees I might not be able to get a job again. I'm taking my chances and moving wherever I can get a good prospect for a job. So why am I bothering to write this here? Because I'm having on of those weeks where I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I may not need money (well, I do, and I'd spend it well, but re nola thing is going to cost so much). I'm asking for advice, and maybe a little help locating another job. I'm also looking for a good, sturdy, XP and WIFI capable laptop to carry with me. I'm going to open up save-a-geek.com when I have some time weds, as well as close down ratemyav temporarily until I can kick the php into shape or get a coder for it. (taking volunteers). The site will mostly be to get some new-ish hardware for me or possible others that need computers but are too poor to afford it. I also plan to write some help guides for DSL users and common people that have problems with computers. I don't know how that will turn out. I'll update this post later, I have to get ready for work, which I'm glad to have, even if I complain about it.

I'm with Enabran...where does donating to you for new hardware fit in with the thousands dead, dying, in need of food, water, shelter, medical care, etc.?

I don't get where they're immigrants.... you're all Americans aren't you? (well I'm not.. I'm an ACTUAL immigrant)
I'm hoping this is a joke - in bad taste admittedly - but a joke nonetheless..
The alternative of course is losing any respect I may have had.

Too poor to afford hardware, but rich enough to afford broken software to run a broken website that you didn't even plan on how to support before you put it up? Yeah, sure, uh huh, just wait for the sympathy to roll right on in.
Try having an actual crisis before you post stuff like this, kthx.

Because charity always starts with "me"...

"A business man doesn't make excuses. He makes a profit." Glad to know people are still trying to carry on the false view that everyone is equally good at everything and nobody should ever have to ask for help. You could just as easily have said the following: "The refugees from louisiana were mainly poor folks that didn't work hard enough to have a car to drive out of New Orleans with. Can't see why I should help them when it's just their lack of effort that's to blame."

Anyone imperiled by an emergency deserves as much help and support as can be offered by those not so afflicted.

Okay. change Immigrants to Refugees. Change "Me and others" to "I need a little help here". This was a bit of a joke, and I should have written a little more before posting. I am going to need some help soon, and the LA folks that wind up here are already being taken care of. NOLA still needs help finding and rescuing people, but it's not being done.

With respect, Burke, there are hundreds of thousands of people who are in desperate need of help: No homes, no food, no water, no future. Compared to them, you're living like a king right now. We all are, if we're connected to the internet and chillin' in our air conditioned homes. It's a little tacky to be asking for money at a time like this, when every charitable cent in every charitable person's pocket should directed toward organizations who can help close the $100 billion gap between now and restoration of the areas afflicted by Katrina.

That's true. Granted. The only time in my day that I'm not baking my ass off is at work, even then it could be a little cooler. I'm not paying much rent here, and I am eating better than I was a few months ago. This week I realized that this job isn't going to last very long (ie, I knew it would end in 11/05, just didn't see that i'd need to start hoofing it for a replacement gig, etc, etc). I see all these people coming to Texas, alot of them might be here permanently. Katrina's effects are going to be felt here for a long time to come. Knowing the city government here in Dallas, any aid money provided to the city will not make it to the people that need it. They can't even decide what to do with the homeless they have. I am hoping to get the computer I bought sometime this week (finally), I think I might even get a free monitor, I don't think a tower and accessories weighs 35lbs. I am going to have to relocate in the near future, and am looking for advice and maybe a little help. I might be able to make it out of here in one peice, on my own. Barring anything going wrong with the town.
