Being forced to think it through yesterday, I've concluded that for all the ideas and arguments about what Linden Lab should do, and the phenomenal things their software could be used to do, Second Life is a wonderful thing just like it is.
Furthermore, I've no right to vocalize my own dreams of superimposing w3b application templates on the sim-server-asset model when I don't work for, or haven't invested millions of dollars in, Linden Lab.
Therefore, I will cease initiating such discussion and be content to simply watch Second Life grow and develop under the care and guidance of professional metaversal gardeners.
Please feel free to throw this in my face anytime. I'll likely need an occassional reminder the first few weeks and promise to not bite any heads off...completely.

I don't THINK so, you're not getting off that easily!

Ah, man... you need a blog. People aren't as bitchy there, and you can delete their comments.

From: someone ...Therefore, I will cease initiating such discussion and be content to simply watch Second Life grow and develop under the care and guidance of professional metaversal gardeners.... I came to this conclusion recently but have to say that if they are gardeners, then they are mostly mute, partially deaf, somewhat delusional, and extremely opportunistic. As it appears now, their plan seems to be: - maximize revenue through increasing market push
- reduce support activities to zero
- farm everything but the ground and sky out to their customers for no recompense (e.g. privatizing the WA)
- hold themselves as a mere content carrier with very low quality backups (i.e. asset lossage)
- stop policing the ToS and CS except as when it suits them
- cease development of SL1 in favor of some other thing (SL2?, something else?)
- work toward making people spend less time in-game (cf. job posting for economic type)
- etc.
But we have no idea what the plan is nor will we, likely. It would be easy to conclude from my posts that I bear emnity toward LL. While that is a reasonable conclusion it is diametrically opposite from my feelings. I'd "invested" a lot of my time and thought into SL. I was a fanatical LL booster for perhaps my first year. Then they seemed to be growing wildly and rather haphazardly and their policies often appear to come from Mars. I'd love to see LL realize the promise of SL, but recently their stewardship has taken a nosedive (e.g. this Hotline to Linden request) and I see no signs of imminent improvement. Perhaps SL is not LL's future. I imagine time will tell if nothing else. So yeah, I too have stopped railing against "da man" and have replaced frustration with wistfulness.

Actually it'd be pretty cool if they farmed out the skies too! It'd be a nice change from the endless sunny seascape.

I had been thinking about privatizing the sky before reading this post. Maybe somebody could get the reflections of the sun and moon to work properly.
