Second Life Relay For Life 2006 **First Call for Team Signup!**

Hi everyone! It's still quite a bit early, but development teams are already hard at work to bring you the second annual SL Relay For Life! For those of you just joining us, last year the SL community organized a virtual representation of the American Cancer Society's signature fund raising event. We built a track spanning 6 full sims and had individuals walk and participate in various activities designed to raise money for cancer research and patient programs. See pics here!

While last year's event was largely an individual-oriented event, this year is going to be different. We'll be organizing teams of 3 to 6 members. Each team will have an opportunity to show how our virtual community impacts the real world by collecting donations for the American Cancer Society between June 1st and July 22nd. We want to encourage some friendly competition, so there will be fantastic incentives for each team to raise more money than the rest. These incentives will be announced at a later date. Each team is also encouraged to keep at least one team member on the track throughout the duration of the event. More information will be provided to team members to help you get organized.

In addition to teams, there will be a large number of improvements over last year's event. If you had a good time last year, you'll be sure to remember 2006! We will be decorating 12 sims from the ground up, making this one of the largest events in SL to date! You can read more information on my blog as it becomes available. Meanwhile, if you would like to sign up a team to participate in this year's Relay, then please reply to this message with the following information:

The deadline to sign up your team is June 1st. It's a ways off, but think of this as an opportunity to get a head start on the rest of the teams! I'll post another call for teams in a couple of weeks.

First, just let me say how very glad I am that you're doing this again this year. Last year's event was not only a good time, but it made me proud to be involved in SL.

My question is.. Will there be ways for people not in teams to be able to help raise money? Will you have any sort of donation boxes that people can put on their land, at their events or in their shops to help raise money?

During Burning Life, quite a few of the artisans were able to set out booths that accepted donations and were able to give a free item in return, with the box scripted to send the money directly to those in charge of the fundraising. (I know my donation box got quite a few donations, though I don't know any sort of grand total.)

Any chance we can get something like this again?

Jonquille, we should be able to code it so it'll work either way, but I'll check with Jade. I'm looking forward to this again - its been a great thing to be a part of every years its been done.

That would be great! I'd love to be able to host a donation box, either by putting it down myself and having the donations go directly to you or Jade, or having either of you set it up for me.

Yes! In addition to the scripted pledge cards, it makes sense to use the old kiosks as well. I'll include those in the team packets. Flip, would it be easy enough to configure these to work alongside the pledge cards?

If you want to put one out at your business without participating, you can have me or any of the team captains place one for you. Whichever team you sponsor by placing a kiosk out will receive credit for those donations.

*frantically tries to think of a team name and who he can put down as team members that won't beat him up when they find out*

hurrah! i hope to beat my lap record from lastyear (150, no speed boosters, just sl given run, but didnt get the highest laps within the time limit due to having to go to work halfway thru >.< )

as is well-known, Events are usually relegated to an area other than General. just where that area is depends on each particular announcement.

some are well put in several of the Classifieds forums, some are better better discussed in the Events forum within the Discussion forums, while others are shuffled off to Notices.

this particular thread has an inherent wont for replies, while at the same time defies the description of the Events section under the Discussion forums. as such, this thread is being most-appropriately moved to... (drum roll, please) Notices & Well-Wishes. (like you didn't see that one coming )

good luck to the SL Relay for Life event, i'm sure it will be amazing.. especially with the "active user base" as compared to this event last time around.
