Educational SL?

Sorry if this isn't the right forum for my query; but hope someone here can help.

It occurs to me that SL would make an interesting distance-learning environment; and I have heard that there are private sims hireable.

Does anyone know whether its possible to rent a server with all the SL features, so one can set it up to use as a teaching and learning aid for one's RL students? If so, where might I find out more; who should I contact among the various Lindens?

I'd say this is a "General" kinda thread if you asked me. If you want it moved I believe the procedure is to report your post (you can do it though this link and ask nicely.

I agree. Second Life is a great platform for distance education. Already, we have a handful of top universities using Second Life to teach classes.

Renting a server is when you purchase an island. Last I checked, it was $1295 US for setup costs and $195 US a month for maintenance and up keep of server.

Check out Campus Island. A number of universities have classes there this semester. In addition, there's a kiosk at the landing point that references other educational builds throughout SL. Not all builds are listed! Also, you might look under Groups in Find to find some like-minded folks. There's more and more distance type stuff happening in SL all the time!
