Well, Linden Lab responded quickly to this bug and so Midnight City has now reopened.
While I don't think ANY resident is thrilled about this recent update (snapshots, chat line focus, ongoing downtime, etc) I will have to give kudos to the developers who worked through the night, on a weekend no less, to prevent disaster.
Thanks guys for a rapid response!
