Perhaps it's time to consider switching from completely open accounts to a "sponsorship" scheme a-la Orkut or Gmail?

Pretty please?

Seconded on Sponsorship

Give people one invite a month, with brand new accounts getting their first invite after their first month. It's a pity for the people who are a part of SL and want to invite their friends, but it's better than attacks every month.

As an alternative means of joining (in addition to the sponsorship), people can sign up without an invite if they provide payment information.

Third on sponsorship

This is insane. How many attacks will it take before you guys realize that your decision to have unverified accounts is hurting SL more than helping? Clearly you can't be THAT blind to keep chugging along with this decision when SL has been brought down to its knees SEVERAL times by these attacks. I like the idea for sponsorship.

I merged all of the Bumps of this thread together. I do appreciate your frustration with the current round greifing attacks. As Robin recently mentioned in another answer, it's not clear that credit card verification is the correct answer. We're also continually working on changes to the way the grid works to help slow down and hopefully completely eliminate grid attacks.
