Legislation passed five or so years ago entitles businesses to basically acquire Internet domain names of the same name. For instance, if someone were to have Microsoft.com, they couldn't hold it hostage and demand a ransom, so to speak.
Will / does Linden Lab have the same policy for sim names? For instance, if someone buys a sim and names it "sluniverse", could Cristiano then have the right to claim it the sim name, since he owns sluniverse.com?

I am not sure what legislation you mean. In any case, trademark law concerns would generally apply to the use of trademarked terms for sim names. If we become aware of use of a sim name in a manner that infringes upon a valid trademark, we would seek to change the sim name. As a word of caution, I would note that questions of infringement and validity of trademark are not always as straightforward as they may appear, so resolution of these issues can be challenging in the abstract and time-consuming with respect to specific examples.
