Will there ever be, or are you looking at IM program type privacy controls for the SL Client?
Available, Busy, Stealth mode for selected friends only, Invisible to map.

Yes, there will be better IM, and more standard controls. We've been talking about the possibility of integrating Jabber, as one option. Unfortunately I don't have a timeframe for when IM will be addressed, but now that the distributed messaging project is finished, it makes it more feasible for us to do an overhaul of IM.
