Back on August 4th, Kelly Linden was kind enough to tease us with the following :

From: someone
We are currently in the process of upgrading our asset servers' software, expanding our cluster of them, and actively developing "features" to reduce the total asset load. These features range from the recently released compression of object data to a scheme I am currently working on to store some kinds of assets *not* on the central asset servers. (I will probably post a blog with more details about my project in the somewhat near future.)

I know I'm very interested in these changes, and many others are as well, as the only complaint I ever have about SL performance involves asset server issues. If I missed this blog post, or if the details were mentioned elsewhere, I would love to know where I could find out more.

I know you guys don't do timetables anymore, so I won't ask about that. But details about what this means, and where you think you are with it, now that I'd like to see.

Thank you for your time.

Oops. I forgot to blog that.

In short "Baked Avatar Textures", which are the composit of all your layers of clothing, are going to be stored on individual simulator hosts instead of the central asset server.

I will find time to blog about this in more detail today.

This is being deployed tomorrow.
