As a supplementary source of income, I also run a web hosting business, and recently I've come upon a web server which has vastly improved my service. I've noticed the SL site has been having some problems as of late, especially during high load periods (most are due to database max connections being reached), but perhaps some of the load could be alleviated with Litespeed Webserver (http://www.litespeedtech.com).
There's three versions of it, standard (free, no limits except for 256 concurrent users), professional, and enterprise. It has many features, including a custom SAPI module for PHP in order to increase speed (which can up to 300% faster than Apache). It's a lighter, faster server, and I think with the forum load at times it could really improve service. I know Fanfiction.net uses this server, and pumps out over two million dynamic pages a day with it. I managed to cut my server load in half moving my high-volume sites from Apache to LSWS.
Perhaps you could pass this along to your web team, as it may be of benefit to them.
