there are large expanses of ocean in SL. but, as near as i can tell, there's no ability to operate sailcraft beyond the immediate vicinity of development. so, i have two questions.
first, are there any expanses of ocean that can be used for sailing in this manner?
second, what's the status of ocean areas? are they owned? can they be owned? what would be the rate? can people build homes under water?
i understand the need to have open areas for people to develop new islands and such, but it would be nice to zone areas for recreational purposes. i mean, that's what SL is about, essentially.

Heya Lotka. We have "void" regions of water, which is exactly that what it sounds like. The area around Baffin region is a good example. There are also other choices like, if you go to: ANWR (154, 224, 0)"Rez your boats here to sail the race course. Follow the red and green buoys around the course." These places can certainly be used for sailing! You can rez a boat off the coast of adjacent land and then cruise out. Or anywhere that you can create new objects, in fact. So, most ocean areas on the mainland are Linden-owned. If you click the menu bar with the name of the land, they may say "Protected Land" and that they're owned by Governor Linden. So those will not be sold off. If you do own land in certain areas, you can surely build a home underwater -- there are no constraints preventing you from doing so. Also, since you mentioned "zone areas", there are numerous private islands offering alternative landscapes and places to live in Second Life. They're all scattered around the bulk of the mainland. On the World Map, if you see some geography that interests you, head in and explore.
