Inventory Control and Management Issues

This is addressed to the Inventory Manager used in SL.

1.) I don't mind how the window itself works, but having the ability to open a second copy of the window for more effective drag and drop would be nice. This one is an idea and not a major issue for me :)

2.) This is a bit more serious. Would it be possible to connect to the server to handle and manage my inventory *without* starting the sim or the chat/im functions ?

This serves several purposes.

It is very distracting trying to manage my inventory with the full sim running in the background. Friends try to IM me (which I don't mind, really. They're my friends after all. It's just that I lose track of what I was doing) and chat dialog keeps zipping by (folks try to talk to me despite being set to busy).

Perhaps a captive and mini sandbox sim just big enough for me to drag items from inventory and drop/open them, but not rez up what they contain ? Could be done with a window, I suppose.. would be better to have a window and a choice to open "boxed" and "bundled" objects into a child window.

Better still would be a truly private sandbox sim where I could build, manage my inventory, script, modify my Avatar and do all the other things I enjoy without creating a huge lag for others or experiencing it myself.

Not only would this allow me to manage my inventory without all the distractions (and the reverse distraction of worrying about finding things in a badly cluttered inventory while wanting to participate in the goings on), it would cut down on the lag for folks on dialup. Several of my friends living much too far away from or who cannot afford DSL or cable have a great deal of trouble editing their inventory when lag is very bad.

3.) Would it be possible to create a method whereby a user can receive an encrypted and/or watermarked copy of a backup of their *own* inventory as a file they can store on their *own* machines ?

This would allow protection from accidents where inventory items are deleted and then the deleted items folder is emptied (likely), loss or damage of contents through exploits and griefers (happens) and loss of inventory if the LL servers are damaged or hacked (not as likely, but still possible).

Since this file is encrypted using the users details (one key) and a private key known only to LL, the DRM incorporated into SL would be maintained.

Good day to you Ryu!

1.) This is currently possible! In your Inventory window, go to File menu > New Window. There you go.

2.) Not currently possible, alas.

3.) Offline object backup is one of those "great ideas" that's been on the drawing board for a long time, and suggested even longer. I don't think it will realistically be coming soon (relative to other projects in the works), but you can vote in support of it. Proposals like:

and there may be more at the Feature Voting Tool.
