Hi Torley, I have gotten several answers in the out and around to this question so I decided to get an official one.

I have a group of stroke survivors and I try to give them a hand sometimes by getting answers for them so that is why they arent asking themselves.

Jane has a friend, Jack, who she wants to bring into SL.
Jack doesnt have a credit card or mobile phone and therefore couldnt register.
So, Jane bought Jack a gift membership.
Jack still needs the credit card/mobile phone to register.

How can Jack register?
Can Jane register for Jack and just let him use the account?
If Jane cant get Jack registered, does she get her gift membership back?

Thanks, Torley,
Soj

Hello Soj! What you mention is a situation I've heard several times before, namely: it isn't made initially clear that a gift certificate will require verification at signup to be redeemed.

To be sure about this I am going to ask Jill, billing expert.

Hi,

Current registration options are credit card (visa, mastercard, amex and jcb), Paypal (which requires a credit card or switch/solo depending where you are) or SMS (mobile phone with text messaging). We require one of these registration methods as they offer a form of identification of the user.

TOS requires true and accurate billing information and also prohibits sharing of accounts. It is not advisable to create an account with your billing information and give away the password. Doing so, you essentially give away all of your personal information in your "my account" page and accept liability for unintended use.

We are always seeking new ways to add accessibility to Second Life to more users. The addition of SMS registration was yet another step towards this as was reactivation of the Paypal registration.

If you purchased a gift code that you can not apply to an account, feel free to email billing@secondlife.com. Provide the code and explain the situation. We can work with you to issue a credit or refund.
