I've made the suggestion before about the ability to mute certain groups so that one doesn't have to leave a group that is too verbose - it didn't seem to be something the "Lindens" felt would be significantly important enough to make a change to.

So now i have put a proposal up about at the very least, the ability for officers of a group to toggle off and on whether "members" of the group can post to group chat or not. http://secondlife.com/vote/index.php?get_id=1418

We have a group that has well over 1000 members, we clearly state it should be for group announcements ONLY. The amount of people that pick the wrong window, forget to shut the window and share their imtimate details with the other 999 members, decide to spam us with invites to their group events, abuse, harrass, type gibberish, etc. etc. is overwealming.

I know this is a problem for other groups too, because the Mentor group just discussed the very same issue.

If for no other reason than this would give us, the group officers, the ability to effectively manage griefers who have to be ejected from a group and the land from spamming our members in group chat. I am tired of ejecting someone who's abusive on our land, removing them from the group (yes it would be nice if this was something you could right click on the person to either invite or remove from an active group and/or be able to search for their nick with a find menu in the group member window) and then finding that they can mouth off in group chat and my entire defence is now to ask them nicely to relog in so that my ban/eject/removal of them can take effect - not many of them are that obliging.

So as there has been no response from a Linden on my proposal, even though we've had 60 votes and 254 votes i'd like to ask here ... is this something that can happen?

This is something that will integrate smoother once the new Group Roles features are roled out. With group roles, owners of a group can decide which members get which power. A power for what you describe - the ability to send or receive group IM - could then be given only to owners, or to everyone, or to no one or something in between.

This feature is not currently planned however. Continue to get support for it on the feature voting tool and in the forums. And remind us sometime after the group changes are released. Thanks.
