THANKS BLUE :) I am looking forward to Cory's session. Happy holidays to you and yours.

Blue you said:
"the symptoms (chat delays, repeated chat) sound to me like what I've experienced with heavy packet loss. On the top right of the screen there are two small bars...the one on the left indicating packet loss and the one on the right, bandwidth. If either is in the red you've got issues. Packet loss is most often a problem on wireless networks, so if you are not directly connected to your broadband modem, I would suggest doing so. There are other causes of, and potential solutions to, packet loss which are listed HERE.

If you've determined that packet loss is not the issue then please do keep an eye on the Blog and the Known Issues page where you might find a description that fits your experience. Also, make use of the technical support section of the Knowledge Base which can often be quite helpful in solving your performance issues.

Worse comes to worse, you can go to Request Help inworld or call Customer Support where someone will hopefully be able to help narrow down the issue."

I found this as misleading given that lost packets are not always attributable to using wireless or other ISP issues...but often directly related to SL infrastructure. For instance with the 1.12 update when packet loss was massive for everyone - all the time. In addition, your answer implies that it's not an SL specific problem...which we all know is false (just look at Don Linden's blog post of 12/15 as example).

Now, when more than a certain number of logins (hard to predict at what number things start to slow down) peformance of the overall grid (not necessarily packet loss) is very poor. Even if I have low packet loss, chat is often out of order, teleports break, changing clothes or attachments can take much longer, etc. This NEVER happens when it is early morning for me (ET US) and less than 10,000 residents are playing for example. If I get on at night and it's at 18,000 logins, it's a whole different game - and people have been saying this for months. To imply otherwise seems disingenuous to me when someone is asking for what might be going on for them (perhaps they don't read the blog?).

New players come on to Linden Answers and want to know why they can't play or why their experience is so different based on number of logins (time of day). I honestly think it's misleading to say this may be because someone is on wireless or losing packets.

I sincerely hope Cory will be addressing the infrastructure piece of the puzzle in his town hall this week. Will he?

Sorry for being longwinded. I too love SL and would love to see it "be better" again :) I think that was your expression a while back...

Sorry Gillian, I had in no way meant to imply that packet loss couldn't be related to SL's network provider, or that wireless networks are the only source. I should have indicated that wireless networks turn out to be by far the most common source of packet loss when I'm troubleshooting with residents here and on the teen grid.

Because packet loss can happen at various stages in the connection between client and server I included a link to the technical support section of the knowledge base which specifically addresses packet loss, and suggests a trace route program to help identify the source...should you be directly connected to your modem and not on wireless.

As to Cory addressing infrastructure, I would hope so, but please do be prepared to ask him Live at the Town Hall meeting :)
