In a place as large as Second Life the map is an essential tool in getting around and understanding where you are in this virtual world. Half GPS unit and half personal Lansat satellite I have come to think of it as indispensable.
Another issue is that land is shown as purple in the map, as if it is for auction but a check of the website does not list those sims. Can I trust any of the sale information? How often is it updated? And events are those current?
The problem is for me and I am certain worse for new comers to Second Life is the relevance and credibility of the map. If you find the information to not match what is on the 'ground' then what part of it can you trust? It increases the reluctance to move forward on an important decision such a purchase or sale of land or the commitment to build something. If the map is broken when will it be fixed?
