I would like to know if LL have plans to set up a proper client side backup system as without this confidence that your work will not be lost and therefore motivation to build the structures that are the lifeblood of second life can never really be established.
I and many others have lost work under mysterious and random circumstances. As an IT professional I accept these things happen and you restore from backup. This is fundamental. You cannot adequately do this in SL.
Firstly if you do back up you do so to your inventory,if LL lose this you are finished, game over. After recent events it is not possible for LL to guarantee this wont ever happen. I woulnt even expect them to. Secondly if you use a mixture of self made and bought objects as most people do you cannot link them and backup to your inventory. For example if you run a club as I do you would have to remove and replace your bought in lights etc after you used them or before you think there might be trouble (LIKE AFTER AN UPDATE !) I know there are methods to make this easier but its far to cumbersome and dosent address my first point.
You should be able to backup the contents of your land and your inventory to your hard drive with a few clicks. Its as simple as that. There may well be technical difficulties with this but it is such a critical facility they must be overcome.
From LL point of view there is the massive advantage of being able to say to people -We have a good backup system - you didnt use it -sorry we cant support you. I wouldnt complain.
Second life is great but if I lose my stuff many more times I wont want to build anymore
and if more talented people than me feel the same (and they do) SL is finished.
In real life you have insurance if your property burns down. Second life needs the same
I would really appreciate your comments on this
Thanks
