I would think this has been addressed at some point, but as a tech for 8 years from another "virtual reality"...the lag is pretty rough in SL. Now, to qualify this, I'm TOTALLY ADDICTED to SL..and kudos to the minds behind it's creation, it's methods etc. The main thing that is well thought out, is how human nature keeps SL growing, and wow, do I wish I could get stock in SL. *grin*
Back to the subject. In the former "virtual reality" lag was a problem also, and it took a few years before each server started to carry less ...well we'll call them "islands" per server...so the lag over the last few yrs is reduced to nil. People there EXPECT ..no lag...period.
Can SL do the same? Example: I bought a piece of first land. The first couple of days, no lag, but also no people, houses etc. In 3 days it's well populated, well built up, and now it lags. We're not, as humans in SL going to buy and wear, and make "less"...in fact that aspect is growing expotentially, so is there a way to assign less load to each server involved?
If this has been answered before, sorry for posting this, Keep on keeping on SL..It's GREAT!!!

Nice to have you with us, Max--thanks for asking, and saying so! Now, "lag" is like saying "my car is broken". Well, which part? Out of oil? Tire flat? Perhaps no engine? It can stem from a great many curious things. A comprehensive article which I often refer to is Lee Linden's post on lag. Going by what you said, it sounds like the lag you're experiencing is client-side--meaning a burden on your computer, not the server--because of a lot of object density, and likely complex geometry. This, of course, can be dealt with in several ways. Effectively, turn down Draw Distance in PREFERENCES ---> ADV. GRAPHICS to 64, and see what happens. Also, in Second Life Preview 1.9.1, which is forthcoming, there's a new feature called occlusion culling which basically does not draw what you can see. If you're in a house and the walls block out massive cities beyond, then you shouldn't be troubled by them slowing you down. It works automatically if your graphics card supports it. Have a nice day!
