Something is Missing From Group Tools

There is something missing from the group tools that I didn't really notice until I began using them today. Groups need "Documents".

I realize that we can attach a notecard to a "Notice", but that only persists for 30 days. There should be a "Documents" tab, that can link notecards to groups, and allow these "Documents" to be created, edited and removed by any group member who has the correct permission for the respective action. This would be infinitely useful.

For example, a group could publish its mission, its rules, a background on what the various roles are used for, etc. These "Documents" could then all evolve over time, and be accessible by any member who has a permission to read documents. Maybe there could even be different security levels on documents, so they could be set for everyone or only people in a certain role.

The documents may also be useful to simulate something that will be lacking in Second Life very soon, a central discussion places for residents. Maybe residents could edit a "discussion" document to simulate a forum. Notices are great for talking AT members, but we really need ways for members to be able to talk WITH each-other.

This sounds like a subset of a group inventory. This is indeed something we want to add, and has been on our minds since before these group changes started. The just released group changes largely serve as a base for new group features. It didn't make sense to add a bank or an inventory to groups without a permissions system. At the same time it didn't make sense to hold off releasing the permissions system until every possible feature for groups was done.

That said we have changed our focus recently to dedicate the large majority of our development power to two areas: fixing bugs and improving scalability. Because of this, these group changes that we know we want will have to be put on hold for a little while.
