“IBM expands into Second Life

Humphrey Cheung

November 10, 2006 17:33

IBM plans on holding town hall meetings in Second Life’s virtual world. Sam Palmisano, Chairman and CEO of IBM, will virtually meet more
than 7000 employees in the game this Tuesday. He even plans on visiting more than 250 on IBM’s virtual island.

The company plans on investing more than $10 million dollars into Second Life and wants a secure way of holding meetings with clients
and other employees. It already meets more than 20 clients in the game.

7000 empoyees logging in ??? probably all on free accounts and probably getting “secure” prime service from SL unlike us.

Now Lindens if IBM is able to log in on tuesday and MEET 7000 of its employees in sl then I want the same service, same support, same hardware as them WE made this game for you WE are the ones that supported this game and grew the comunity.

I want to know what "special services" IBM get, how come there island can cope with 250 people and why are they SO sure that they can meet 7000 of there employees in SL this coming tuesday when I can't even promise my friends I can log in ?

I pay for my sim, its not my fault I pay at the old rates, i've been loyal for over a year in sl and brought many of those lovely numbers of people you like so much into game:(

This is an interesting story, for sure. However IBM is receiving no technical advantage from us. Simply put, we don't have any magic sims that can support 250 residents at once better than others, we don't have hidden super computers to run sims for special clients. They just don't exist. I do not understand what IBMs plans are. I do know island owners can set the avatar limit on their islands, perhaps he just hopes he can get 250 people on one, I'm not sure.
