I guess the title says it all.
Maybe in communication SL should assume not assume that everyone in SL knows the jargon.

A resident's 'presence' is a set of information that includes: whether or not they are online, and if so where they are.
Presence in general is the systems and mechanisms that track and communicate that information. When Presence is broken it means friends online status may be wrong, or IMs to people online go to their email or other similar issues.
Presence as a system is one of our big scaling issues. By which I mean, the more residents we have, the more that are online at one time, and the more actions we have that want to know presence information, the harder the problem gets. In other words, as we grow, which we are growing, we need to continue to work on this.
We have been working on replacing our existing presence structure with a more robust and more scalable system. However the nature of the problem means it is very hard to test real world load conditions. Some changes to this system yesterday caused some serious load issues once a certain threshold of residents were online. This is what was fixed during the down time.
