With 16,000+ online. How many of those residents are just camping?
If LL banned camping, would the online number drop to a value that SL could handle at least for a month or two while the developers had some breathing room to solve the problem?
I'm a software developer in RL and I know how the "fix it now" pressure can really hinder the "fix it for good" solutions.
Maybe this would help. (and beside, it would also make "Popular Places" useful again.

Clev3r name. =) I don't know of specific stats targeted as camping, vs. merely "idling" or "going AFK", but I also don't think the answer's as easy as "ban camping". (As much as I like simple solutions.) I've heard a diversity of suggestions across the board: and indeed, there are some cases where Residents just wanna make L$ fast but... they've never heard of LindeX! In cases like that, a little education goes a long way. Some people just need to be socially aware of other opportunities — if camping's all they know, it's all they'll do. Unfortunately I'm not familiar with a clearer technical solution. It's nice to say "solve it" with new code, but... how? The suggestion I've come across have had as many counterpoints as points, not making them amenable to the community at large — nor those who have camping chairs on their own private islands. As despised as the activity is by some, it's partaken in by others... so I suppose another thing to look for, would be replacement activities to encourage people to get involved in, in addition to just camping. If you have a proposal, feel free to garner support for it in the Feature Voting Tool.
