Unless you can put in code to stop grid attacks, and some are bringing up the fact that they have alts on legitimate unverified accounts that they wish to keep anonymous even to Lindens....(hey, with all the kinky sex people engage in, some would feel funny knowing even one person knew who they really were in RL, even a Linden), then couldn't you come up with some way of auto-banning anyone attempting to attack the grid or who is successful in an attack and instantly logging off the griefer? Someone else mentioned 30 days too before unverified have full use of tools. That would be good too coupled with the above feature, or at least 2 weeks.
After all, it's not really the RL info that's needed but just a way to identify the account so it can be banned. But even better would be a built in ban and message such as "Oops, you are trying to launch an attack on the grid...bye!" If someone truly goofed up and made something bad by accident they could appeal it and get unbanned if LL deems them to be telling the truth.
I posted last night about different ways people could be verified. But after reading posts today, I'm reminded that there are some who woundn't feel comfortable in their type of roleplay if even one person knew who they were in RL. I know SL wasn't created with the intention of people being able to explore all their sexual fantasies, but it has become a big part of SL and the freedom to harmlessly experience them is priceless.
So can you come up with a way to keep the RL anonymity option but build in an auto-ban into self-replicating and other scripts that go over the safe limit?
There have been so many suggestions in several forums. Maybe one of the Lindens could browse through all the posts, make note of them and then you all could have a brainstorming session and see which would be the best and be acceptable to the majority of the customer base, verified and unverified. I'm just trying to help with suggestions in case you all are so busy trying to repair the grid to think about preventive measures at the moment. Hope you don't mind.
P.S. I do think it would be a good idea to close open registration for a few days while you're repairing all this mess so the griefer can't keep making alts to undo all you just fixed. By then you should have other roadblocks in place and then can reopen it. If you do this, will you post to us that you have so we can have some sense of security while this is being fixed?
