I know it's a big thing, and will take time, but if I could get an estimate on when we'll see the group update, I can plan my ritual sacrifice accordingly. I'd like to burn Torley and possibly another Linden at the stake to make sure this all works okay.

I don't know about sacrificing Lindens....
However, groups is in testing. It is considered 'Feature Complete'. There are bugs that are currently being worked on, and anything you can do to help find more bugs in preview (which as I understand it, requires manually downloading the client right now ... due to a bug ... even if you already had the client installed. ie the auto updater is teh busted), will probably help a lot more than sacrificing any of our beloved Lindens.
