So, apparently back in the golden age of SL you could have objects with more than 31 prims with physics enabled. And, at one point when the change was made these items were allowed to stay functional. As a result, anyone with a full-perm high-prim physics enabled object can modify it prim by prim to create new, high-prim vehicles and physics-enabled objects.

What is LL's official stance on this, and the distribution of resulting objects? If I agree to give a percentage of the profit to someone to have them rebuild a high-prim physical object for me for a project I'm working on is this "ok" and legal with LL? Will these objects remain viable as they have for the last couple years, or what are the chances that they may break?

Thank you for your time and response.

Yes, back in the day there was a bug that would allow physical objects greater than 31 prims, however I fixed it and it is no longer possible. As the developer who wrote the code, I don't believe the rumors that some people can still modify >31 prim physical objects. Today I would expect any legacy >31 prim obect in inventory to rez in several disctinct unlinked pieces. If anyone knows of a method whereby >31 prims can be achieved then that would be considered a bug, and I'd love to get the recipie so I can reproduce it on my development station and figure out how to break it.

In any case, I'm due to overhaul the linkage code very soon to fix a variety of problems that are preventing us from moving forward on improving the physics engine. I'll keep an eye out for odd linkage paths while I rewrite sections of that code.

Some people have figured out how to use very high prim attachments at the pelvis to create vehicles that appear very detailed when you sit on them. The high prim attachment hides the true <31 prim vehicle.

Will we ever allow >31 prim linked physical objects? Yes, some day.
