I was talking to Yiffy Yaffle last night while getting her to make me a couple of signs with an inlay look, when it dawned on us that custom bumpmaps would really improve the quality of textures in SL. Take for instance avatar bumpmapping for a more realistic appearance, or giving real depth to the signs that I wanted last night (a gold plate with a carved inlay on a wooden sign). It doesn't seem like it'd be any more difficult to add than another image download set, and instead of a drop down menu for default bumpmaps it'd be another texture selection window.

I believe this is on the BLoTtD (Big List of Things to Do) for graphical enhancements, now that we've got ahold of some major milestones like hardware lighting and some sorely-wanted features like shiny AND translucent at the same time.
A scene combining all of these would look ace: having an embossed sign framed with transparent aluminium in the middle of the night, one dim light shining upon it. Also related, should you wish to voice your support: http://secondlife.com/vote/index.php?get_id=355 _____________________
