Some statistics about the number of sims were recently posted here by Robin Linden, who wrote that there are (were) 3,370 total regions.

According to the economic statistics page, there are currently 1,600 private islands. Private islands also seem to be growing at a much quicker pace than the mainland (10%+ per month, after they were shut off).

Does the 3,370 figure include the 1,600, meaning that nearly half of all land in SL is of the private island variety? And that in the next month or so, over half will be?

Not that this is good or bad, just interesting.

We supply Private Islands as quickly as we can due to demand -- right now, a slowdown because the Land Store is down while we get new hardware tested and added to our grid.

Yes, that figure includes Private Islands.

And we're committed to continue to grow the mainland, since we recognize there are a lot of different interests and needs in SL. (Some pit one vs. the other, but I'd rather explore both than be confined to one type.) Guy Linden has recently become our new Land Guru and he's going to be helping expand the mainland further.

It is sure interesting. :)
