Been away from forums for a couple of days - is it true that they've cut the stipends for newbies? Who was the freakin' genius to come up with that plan? Has some supremely wealthy *Land Baron* influenced this decision?

I met a newbie the other day and she asked me how one goes about making any money in SL. I thought it was an easy enough question to answer...

Well, since she had no skills in building, scripting and setting up vendors, starting a buisness for her was out of reach for months at least.

She obviously has no experience playing games much less hosting, so getting a job that pays the RL equivalent of 50ยข per hour is out of the question.

I said she could learn to gamble and hope to make some money that way, but by definition, it's a gamble, and if she does gamble and lose, how is she to build any cash from zero? Prostitution?

She could go from Money Tree to Money tree plucking $1L bills, or sit like a zombie for hours on end in one of the few camping chairs left - but is that the experience you want new people to have?

Answer me - what am I to tell a new person who asks how he or she can make a few dollars so they can properly enjoy the SL experience?

Jeeze- cut the stipends from those that are well established - which could be defined as anybody over 1 year in SL - but fercrissakes, let the new people have SOMETHING to play with!!!

Does chopping off the newbies' only source of $L make sense to anybody?

Only new Basic (Free) accounts will stop receiving stipends. They should still start with a small amount of L$.

Options to get more L$ include:
Earn it: Yes this will require some skill, no it may not be easy or quick. There are many options listed at http://secondlife.com/whatis/businesses.php.

You mentioned many of these and other ways of earning money in your post. You are correct that it is not easy and may take time, effort and skill.

They could also upgrade to Premium. Premiums will continue to receive $500 weekly stipend, even for weeks in which they do not log in.

They could also purchase the L$ they need from Lindex or another currency exchange. Purchasing L$ from within the client is as easy as clicking the blue L$ button next to their balance in the upper right corner, assuming of course they have given us appropriate billing information. Alternative ways of purchasing L$ can be found at http://secondlife.com/whatis/currency.php.

The stipends for basic accounts are hardly their only potential source of income. No the other methods are not as easy as the stipends were.
