One thing I've always wondered about - by what process does Linden Lab use to create all those trees, plants and clusters of grasses where they take up a single prim?

Just imagine the possibilities if we residents had that ability - we could create an entire house that took up 1 prim. :)

The special types you mention are hard coded into the Second Life system, are limited in their customizability and have special properties. They also are not very complex.

The 'prim' serves as a kind of measure of object complexity for both simulating on the server and rendering on the viewers. Allowing multiple prim sets to be 'baked' down to a single prim has been discussed before, and while something similar may be possible in the (distant) future it is not possible at this time. Additionally it would almost definitely not be a reduction to 1 prim, but depending on the algorithm used and the amount of complexity reduced by the merge it could possibly be some fraction of the original prim cost.

Other possibilities would be extending some of the linden objects to allow resident customization. For example being able to modify the textures and/or parameters for a linden tree and saving that as a new tree type that still behaved like other linden trees is a possibility. Again though this is not something we are currently working on, and as far as I know we have no plans to make this possible any time soon.
