I understand that attempting to read lines from a notecard that contains asset items always results in getting EOF (or nothing), but what is the reason for this? Is it ever possible that it will be changed?

It is possible this will change. The reason has to do with *how* we embed items in notecards, and we are working on changing that. We need to change it primarily because our current implementation makes UTF-8 notecards impossible. A side effect of that work may make it possible to read notecards with embedded items from scripts, although that may still have to be something done afterwards (ie it may not happen at the same time as UTF-8 notecards).
