What's the "larger avatar project" that Robin is referring to here? Does it have to do with new avatar meshes (perhaps a new male avatar ;)), new and/or better-fitting clothing items, generalized texture layers, flexible attachments, etc.?

It does. Avatars are such an essential and unique part of SL--innovating and continuing to improve them is undoubtedly important. Broadly put, the "larger avatar project" is an umbrella for a number of things that are in development right now, including aesthetics, communication, and just plain kewlness. I myself am quite intense about experiencing all this for myself. That being said, it's best to provide more details when things are more clear and nearer to release--you know how it goes with feature anticipation.

8) Avatar improvements

We've got a few projects in the works here. Not sure which will be ready to show first, but believe me -- there will be public preview when something IS ready!

9) flexible attachments (Ben showed a video on his blog)

In development right now. Targeted for release AFTER the next major release.

That was a month and some awhile ago, and if you've been keeping track of Second Life versions, you'll know it can't be too far away now. ;)
