Hi,

I have searched the forums and i cannot find an answer to this:

Why does SL automatically log you out after 30 mins of inactivity?

The reason i ask is this:

Just because i am not at my computer, doesn't mean that my Avi is not serving a purpose on my land. If i was at my computer, anything i wish to do in SL is permitted as long as it doesn't break the rules, so why can i not set my avi off to do it automatically?

Everyone i have met in SL that wishes to stay logged on has scripts to do such a thing, so what is the purpose of the auto logoff?

I'm fed up of being logged off while in photoshop or grabbing a bite, and as i can do whatever i like in SL, why can't i just stand in the same place for 8 hours as a peice of art or a statement for something?

I hope this isn't considered a stupid question, as it affects me every day, and is something i would like to see as a setting within preferences that i can turn off.

Thank you for your time.

Hi Sharper! You could look at this in a number of ways. And actually, the time before logoff can be changed in Preferences > General, not to mention be stopped by other means like the "God mode hack"--ask Eddy Stryker 'bout that. :)

A purpose of it I've seen several times are international friends who have bandwidth caps. Staying on SL would drain their bandwidth, and they sometimes forget to logoff, being immersed in other windows of code and whatnot.

Another reason is simply because SL is about people. And it's boring if everyone was just standing around without doing anything... ZOMBIE NATION. o.O

As you mentioned, there are ways to circumvent it. We are going to be looking at longer-term ramifications too.

Take care!
