Are proxy settings in Preferences fake?

I can't log in any more with the latest version of SL.

I've always used a socks5 proxy to log onto SL (http://proxylabs.netwu.com) as my network blocks all ports above 1024. Everything was working fine in SL for *months* until this last update, but now I can't get past the "verifying protocol version" screen. I've tested *everything* and I'm convinced it's SL. Every other program works fine through my proxy except SL.

Asking around, I've heard from other residents that SL's built in proxy settings in Preferences are "fake" since not every request is sent through it, particularly the logon sequence. So I'm posting here in the hopes that a Linden sees me, and others like me, not as "hackers" trying to get around firewalls but legitimate users with strange network settings and help support us by sorting out a proper proxy solution, or at least undoing whatever was done in the last update so we can get in using our own solution to get in... :(

It appears as if SL's network ports/connections are kind of all over the map, not respecting tunnelling or other rules. Even WoW works fine through a proxy.

I totally agree with other other residents who have told me if Linden Labs would simply implement the proxy in their software instead of just the fake one that's there - one that fully ran all requests out through the port you enter in Preferences - then everything would be working perfectly for all!

Help me! :( I miss SL!

xoxo

Hi Lana, sowwies--yeah, that's confusing. Those proxy settings, to the best of my knowledge, don't actually do much. Maybe they should be removed to avoid confusion until they do work--I'll make a note of that. Again, apologies for the confusion. Sounds like you're having a dreadful time so I hope you can get back into Second Life soon enough.
