Alt account creation policy is unfair and biased

Linden Labs,

It has come to my attention that you may be unfair in allowing users to create alternate accounts. While you will allow "special" users to create multiple accounts that exced the limit for whatever reason, it seems unfair that you will not take into consideration the number of individuals within a household before telling someone that they cannot create another account because their household has exceeded the 5 per household limit.

What do you do about College Dorms that house several individuals but bear the same street address? What about those of us who rent out rooms to tenants? What about people who access SL from relatives they are living with, then leave? After they leave, they may still use the account but it still counts against that households 5 account limit! Do I have to MOVE to resolve this??

If someone has family members who do not have internet access, or their computer does not meet the requirements for using SL and they use my computer, then why should that account be counted towards MY household? I would think that anyone who is recruiting family members and friends would be doing SL a favor. But I guess you do not see it that way.

When speaking with a Linden on the issue, I was told that it was handled on a "case by case" basis. But after my wife spoke with you on the phone, she was told differently. So can you please tell everyone under which "cases" do you allow for additional accounts? What are the circumstances? Are you unbiased about it or are you playing favorites? It seems if the account is for legitimate purposes, you would understand.

My wife has her account and an alt account. Her sister who lives with us has 2 accounts. Then there's my account. So I cannot create an alt for myself and neither can my wife no matter if we use a new credit card or not. Not only THAT, you counted my friends account who only comes by and doesnt even live here! We were told on the phone that it's because he logged in on my computer.

Would you like to come by my house to verify? We are having BBQ this Saturday...please stop by. Should I send a picture? I can email you a short movie. I'll be happy to do so.

It appears that you may need to reorganize your policy and make sure that you are meeting the needs of your customers. While I understand that some may abuse the system for one reason or another, it's not true in all cases.

Thank you for your time.

Hello Thorne!

Firstly, I apologize for the undue inconvenience, and thank you graciously for going so far as to let us know about what's happened to you.

I think it's wonderful to hear how so many people in your house want to be on SL! :)

One thing I'd like to clarify, please, is: after you've created your account, you can access Second Life normally on other computers (and in other households) without reverification. Which means that yes, if you are a guest at a friend's, no worry there. We want to make it as easy as possible.

Our alt account policy:

From: Daniel Linden
We've set the account creation limits at two per Credit Card or Paypal, and five per household. These restrictions are in place on the Registration page, and in most cases those with a reasonable need for additional account per card or household can get one by contacting Support.

These limits were always meant to be based on active accounts -- but the current implementation counts closed accounts. That doesn't make a lot of sense, and we'll get that fixed.

We've put these controls in place, primarily, to combat fraud. Because Second Life is an intensely social space where many Residents have invested serious amounts of time, money, and energy, we feel it makes sense to take steps to help make indentity in-world as tangible and vaulable as possible.

Any Second Life Resident can easily have their account and an alt if they so choose; their partner, sibliing, or other household memeber with a seperate form of payment is not restricted from creating additional accounts. These are very reasonable limits, and they help protect the Second Life community. For what possible reason could one person need 30 accounts?

So it sounds like the above is related to your situation.

I can't help you with this directly, but I know who can--I'm going to let our customer service Lindens know you made this post, just in case there's anything else we can do for you. If you don't hear back shortly, feel free to IM me inworld or email me (torley@lindenlab.com).

All the best with this!
